- Scott Monteiro Jr. 2009
Scott A. Monteiro Jr. 2009
On September 6, 2009, Scott Monteiro Jr. (21) died after being shot in the head during a house party at 24 Elmwood Street. Scott was transported to Tobey Hospital and then Beth Isreal Deaconess Medical Center in Boston where he later died.
Wareham Police recovered a spent shell casing from the ambulance and, during Scott's autopsy, recovered three fragments of a shell casing. The shell casing from the ambulance was from a .22 caliber firearm, and the fragments were consistent with being from the same firearm.
Investigation 2009
On September 4, 2009, at approximately 10PM a group of twenty (20) to thirty (30) people arrived at 24 Elmwood Street for a house party. A female at the party inquired with the host if she could invite her friend, Justin. Around midnight on September 5, 2009, Justin arrived with a group of ten (10) to fifteen (15) uninvited guests. As the party was going, tensions began to rise after several of the uninvited guests disclosed, they were from "United Front" in New Bedford.
A short time later, the majority of the New Bedford group left the house. A few minutes later, several people reentered and approached Sheldon Santos (17) who was sitting on the couch next to his girlfriend.
Four (4) witnesses stated Vernon T. Carter (20) pointed at Sheldon's head and demanded his imitation gold necklace. The imitation gold necklace had a value of $3.
Scott Monteiro Jr. (21) then stepped in and attempted to calm the situation. Vernon then discharged the firearm three (3) times, one (1) bullet striking Scott in the head. During the chaos, Sheldon was assaulted and his necklace was stolen. Sheldon became uncooperative after police asked him to identify Vernon on a photo array, and he refused to speak further with the police.
Vernon was arrested by Massachusetts State Police on a warrant. During an interview regarding the incident, Vernon disclosed that Justin hid a firearm after the shooting. Vernon provided information on where the firearm was specifically located. Massachusetts State Police recovered a .38 caliber from an apartment, which didn't match the shell casing obtained from the ambulance and was not the firearm used in the murder.
Verdict 2013 Vernon Carter
Vernon was convicted of 1st-Degree Murder including firearms charges and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
