                              William Casavant 2003

On November 2, 2003, Fall River Police received a 911 call from Kathleen Ferreira (30) requesting assistance at their Foot Street residence, she shared with William Casavant (50). William and Kathleen had a well-documented violent relationship.  William and Kathleen met in 2000 while they both were participants in an alcohol detox program. William's wife, Jane Casvant (24) had passed away in 1979.
Fall River Police arrived and located William, deceased. Kathleen explained to investigators that William had been drinking and threatened to kill himself by ingesting a large number of pills. Kathleen claimed William at one point had vomited and fell from the bed. She claimed she cleaned him up but was unable to get him back onto the bed, so she left on the floor. Kathleen left the home for less than an hour, and upon her return determined William wasn't breathing. She attempted CPR, then dialed 911.

Investigation
Emergency Medical Services arrived along with the police. The EMS providers informed investigators at the scene William had likely been dead for longer than Kathleen claimed. It appeared Rigor Mortis stage of death had begun.
The Medical Examiner determined William had been forcibly suffocated. Kathleen was charged with 2nd-degree murder.

Verdict 2008 Kathleen Ferreira
All charges were dismissed. In July 2008 the Court found the grand jury had heard  sufficient evidence that Kathleen had committed 2nd- degree murder. Kathleen acknowledged she had held the pillow "hard" over the victim's face, she maintained to the end that she "did not do it to hurt him".
The Court concludes that the integrity of the grand jury proceeding was impaired by an unfair and misleading presentation as to Kathleen's statement of her state of mind as she allegedly placed the pillow over the victim's face.  It was further impaired because the testifying officer ignored material exculpatory portions of her testimony and thus kept the exculpatory evidence from the grand jury.  The result was that the evidence was materially distorted.  The officer's testimony was made with reckless disregard of the truth and with the intention of securing a murder indictment.
